The End of MOIP3

Sorry for not updating this blog frequently. But I guess you could see how I progressed from the last post? Since I did not really do much before that...
Welll, anyway, to sum things up, did most of the scenes/bg during the weekend actually. Was planning to stay up the whole night to perhaps try to finish as much as I can, but I ended up falling asleep >____>.. I'm surprised I could still sleep after showing so much determination. Ahaha.. So, ended up rushing everything last minute this morning, thus the bad pacing.
I have, however, begun to be more relaxed at times like this I guess :)

ANYWAY. Before that... I shall... talk a bit more about production.
Problems I encountered includes...
1. Coloring style.
Before that, I actually had 3 in mind. One was of flat color, one semi cell shaded, while the other was of a rendered type. I liked the rendered one best, but it was really time consuming to do, and it's probably more suited for illustration. At that time, I kind of knew I had to drop that option.. and as days passed, I decided to go for flat color, eventhough I still ask for people's opinions at times.

2. Character Animation
I've had some trouble with some scenes, for it to not look awkward and all. For some scenes, managed to get opinion from others. :] Unfortunately, couldn't really finish one particular scene, which was probably the hardest. As for the rest, I took quite some time because of the sudden urge to change the angles and all. Some shots were still... while some were quite off. Didn't really manage to solve it (it was the part after the fridge, to the pizza part). :(

3. Background Design + Style
This was really last minute. I only decided on it like... Saturday night? or was it Sunday morning? Ahh,.. somewhere there. I was worried some would think of it as a lazy method, taking shortcuts and all. but Honestly, I think it didn't turn out to be as bad as I thought, though consistency might be a problem for some. In fact, I think most people liked the background more than the character animation. Aha.. Not too sure if that's a good thing. Kind of happy though, because I'm always weak when it comes to backgrounds. but! This method isn't really a shortcut. I took really long to decide on the colors and the feel of it. Ohh, and I'm glad I decided to use some textures :]

4. Character Design + Consistency
Was worried as for some shots, the character looks a little different. Plus, at that time, I haven't settled for the female character design. I was fine with the outcome though. Hope it was suitable!

Oh yeahhh, for the TV part, I had to change to an easier-to-animate option. Not too suitable I guess :< especially the part with evil veges. Ahaha~ It's more like an inside joke though.. IF.. IF I were to finish this piece, I'll probably have to take that part off. I did have fun designing them though :]

Hmm, That should be all I guess o_o... Okay, back to where I was?
How I pictured my animation to be in mind turned out to be super different in the end, because of the coloring style and all, but I guess I kind of liked how this one went. This time was kind of like, an experiment anyway?
Was too bad I couldn't finish animating and all, like, not even the title/ credits! D:
But... Uh.. I'll see if I'll finish it or not. Doing it during the hols doesn't sound too right, but at the same time, not too wrong either.

Hmm, but well, I guess from this experience, it shows that every animation would have different target audiences. What we like might not we what others like, and we can't really please everyone. OH, and time management. I hope I won't experience the low morale feeling again, especially for FYP. It was really bad :\
Yeaaahhhhh,... OKAY. Off to holiday mode! We all need it!
and Good job, everyone!! :D

Last thing..Special thanks to lecturers, family, and friends :]

Green Light?

Honestly, I did not do anything from interim onwards.
So...Whatever you will see on Monday... will be things I did from today onwards. >_>
Sorry, no motivation to do work these days! :<
I will TRY my best to cover up for the time wasted, hopefully.

Wish me luck? Haha.

Doing things digitally

Not really an update. Floor plan is not complete yet. Just...
Once again, tired and uninspired :( Pretty lost, and I can't seem to get myself to start.
Also not too sure what to use for my animation. Traditional? Flash? Photoshop?
I actually decided on Flash already, because that would mean I could do work at home as well, not too time restricted... but I didn't quite like the feel of it when I used the brush tool in school today. On the other hand, tracing over with line tool would be a pain :(
So... I actually asked for my brother's opinion. He hasn't really seen my animatics or so, but he said that this would be a good time to experiment, probably my only chance to do so till FYP. Plus, he said I should try doing my animation digitally, because it's more.. erm, modern? Haha. So.. now I'm stuck with either Flash or Photoshop.

Oh, watched The Emperor's New Groove today - Adeline's recommendation. Nice animation, but story wise, not really my kind. Have to say they portrayed the characters quite nicely though : ) I like the expressions. Also saw the making. Too bad there was an error when it comes to coloring the characters :< It is quite interesting to see them choosing color schemes for the good and the bad characters though.

Interim 2 - Animatics

Errr, while doing the animatics, I changed the story a little. So here it is, my animatics (with no audio):

Was happy that Alan commented something about the animatics being able to tell the story.
There were also other comments:
... add more shots on the cookies disappearing, and when there's no more cookies, perhaps he counts with his fingers and then does an action like he doesn't know, but perhaps he's eaten them all.
... needs more time for fade to black from first scene to the TV scene. It was too sudden. or perhaps have the audio of the TV program first.
... straw longer maybe, and it needs to turn to finish the drink.
... good expressions
... for the fridge scene - uh..sfx, fridge ambience? and the transition from black= opening of fridge.
... hand reaching for phone - like he's flying (superman?) so perhaps a zoom in, then with the hand reaching for it.
... when it comes to the pizza number part, finger should be as if tapping, not really moving that way. Timing too slow.
... guy should probably watch football? haha, and perhaps a bottle of coke with the pizza. Maybe he was already eating one, but when he's about to reach for his second piece, he finds the whole box gone.
... as for the ending, show the girl giving him a new piece of pizza

I hope I got them all right! Do let me know if there's a mistake or something. Perhaps comments from people reading this as well?
Anyway, was happy that Alan liked the title, because I'm usually bad with those - anything to do with words!

Well, I hope I'll be able to animate it well. I'm still not sure what I'm using - traditional? Flash? Photoshop? ...??? :( What do you think would be most appropriate with the time left and all? Flash, I guess? but actually, I'm not VERY familiar with flash, especially with their effects and symbols. Oh well, perhaps it's time for me to learn more about it. But anyway, not confirmed yet about using flash.
As for traditional, I don't really mind except for the fact that I don't have a lightbox and scanner. Oh and there's the vectorising in Toonboom. Based on experiences, sometimes the coloring is not perfect, like some parts are pixellated? Not too sure why... Well, if there's another method to make the animation look better, I might try. I feel like doing something different from P2 or Anim2.
Other than that, I bet audio would take a long time. Actually wanted to do some after presentation, but I was hungry + sleepy, AND the juniors or something were hanging out there. =____=... Perhaps I should leave a note there one day or something.

Oh yeah, not going for CG Overdrive talks :( Too expensive for me. Another factor would be the talks (language). In my whole life, I haven't really thought of any talks being interesting. Also, with the little knowledge/ vocabulary that I have, most of the time, I've difficulty figuring out what people are saying (which explains my puzzled look at times). Oh well, perhaps when I grow up? oh BUT I'll probably go for the exhibition. It's free admission, right? :)

Reminder for self: Arghhh, gantt chart. Portfolio. Production.

Tekkon Kinkreet Screening

Sorry Alan for being very inactive here. Honestly, I'm more concentrated on Animation2 now, especially with the lack of manpower...

Anyway, short update for today.
Watched Tekkon Kinkreet. Heard of it before, I think it was from DeviantArt artists' fan arts and journals. The first thing that caught my attention was the background. That was some sort of a first time for me, because I usually dislike backgrounds (especially when I'm weak in them D: ).

So.. Tekkon Kinkreet. I didn't exactly understood the whole story, but visual wise, it was really cool. So, to me this show shows the relationship between two brothers? and how they balance each others' lives? Hahah, I probably got confused at some parts I guess. But I knew the environment was very important, as they kept saying "MY town". Some parts that I do not really understand was on Shiro(White)'s imagination and action (at one point, he floated down).

BUT. I have to say watching the making was worth it. We get to see how animator lives are like, how much the animation mean to them, how they also struggle with deadlines and obstacles, how they work and feel, and some techniques! *cough* I'm quite proud to have thought of the same concept of using after effects to create a 2D-3D environment even before seeing the show though... BUT IT FAILED because of bad time management. Well, I also envy their background artists, as they were all hand painted. Once a mistake is done, it's goneee D: I admire their perseverance. Seeing them reminded me a little little bit of the time during our P2 though.

Other than that, I like Shiro's character design. Even though weird with all the random hats, I actually loved the watches and toilet tissue paper roll attached to him. I think he also has a unique character. Childish, but deep at the same time.

So.. I guess today's screening has taught me a few things. The importance of background, character designs, sound, achieving goals, visualising, and teamwork .

Other than that, heard that we've to show our progress soon. Hopefully it will be due on Friday :'D, since Thursday's our submission for Anim2. I'm planning to change my character design. I think he looks too childish/ young. It should be okay I guess, since I didn't really have a finalised one... but I really really hope P3 will go well!

Storyboard 03 + Feedbacks

Got feedbacks from Amanda:

Some on shot sizes/ angles like above. She also mentioned things about the order of my storyboard panels. Other than that, she said that the character shouldn't really 'communicate' to the audience (like panel 8). Panel 10 might confuse audience as we only see a pair of legs. It could have been another character. 27 is not needed. 32-34 not effective I guess?

Later on, showed it to Alan. Like Amanda, 32-34 is not effective. He said that's not what people do for that. He also suggested the girl offering him half the burger in the end. Anyway, will probably add the straw part.
Finally had it kind of approved, at least for the flow, and it's mostly thanks to Alan for it. Thank you! :)

Weekend

Spent the weekend thinking some more. While that, I asked for my brothers' opinion on the storyboard, and how it could be improved.

My elder brother came up with some interesting ideas, using the same concept and storyboard that I've done, but with a different character with different traits.
The woman he suggested sounded like Dexter's sister - DeeDee in Dexter's Laboratory.
Basically the characters he suggested were very contradicting. One is angry/unhappy, while the other is naughty/happy/colorful. Like whatever she touches => happy. Example: flower in pot that was dying> bloomed.

My eldest brother came up with another idea, where the other character isn't revealed at all. His was a mixture of comedy and suspense. This storyboard was quite a last minute take on my eldest brother's suggestion. Rough one. Haaa.. Sorry for coming up with crap drawings like this. Had no motivation/ inspiration while doing it.

Alan gave comments about it, and gave some suggestions. He didn't quite like how it goes.
So... will be doing a new storyboard again!

Presentation 1

Character Design

Storyboard

The whole class showed their storyboards, lasted for 2 days.
Here's my first storyboard.

Came early. Before class started, I approached Alan. I didn't like my story, especially the story flow. After drawing the whole thing, there wasn't really a reason why the main character should be a samurai either. So.... I went to ask for his opinion.

The first thing he asked for was to see my character designs. He commented that one looked very traditional and angry, while the other looked very modern and anxious. He said that if he was the audience, he wouldn't want to be in their shoes.
Alan gave some suggestions, like what he suggested the other day.

On the 2nd day, sketched some characters. (which was then not used)

Day 06

Links of other stories: in Post 2 (Day 02)

While that, still had to edit my Learning Contract.

...still bad when it comes to language. ..
Sorry. :(

Day 05

Surprisingly tiring even when there wasn't much going on.
Basically, today was about learning contracts.

As usual (since this usually happens), I am stuck.
Stuck because I can't get the right story flow.
Should I go for action or something that would go for others' feelings?
Action is something I've wanted to try for some time, but not quite the same for the story line I have right not. On the other hand, the other option is something I've always wanted to do and achieve, but.. AHHHH this is frustrating.

Next, even when it's pretty urgent, I find it amazing that I am still able to procrastinate.
No story = no storyboards = no characters/ style =_=

I have no idea why, I just don't feel too motivated to do P3 OR Animation 2. Not really looking forward to doing them. I hope this feeling goes off soon..

Day 03 - Project Proposal (edited)

Heard that we have to fill in some Learning Contract.
Other than that, was actually happy that we didn't have to present. Anyway, here's my Project Proposal: answers to the 10 questions.
Before that, although you've heard of it, I'll just paste the article of the weird story I'm doing on.

Title: Japanese man finds woman living in his closet
Posted Fri May 30, 2008 11:00pm AEST

A Japanese man puzzled by food mysteriously disappearing from his refrigerator got a shock when he found out a woman had been living in his home for months without permission, police have said.
The 57-year-old man living alone - or so he thought - in the western city of Fukuoka installed a security camera and called the police when he saw images of someone walking around his home while he was out.
"We searched the house in the man's presence. We found the woman in the closet," said a local police spokesman.
The woman, named as 58-year-old Tatsuko Horikawa, was found in a flat storage space only just big enough for a person to squeeze into lying down.
She had sneaked a mattress and several plastic bottles into the cubby hole, police said, adding that the women had been arrested.
"She told police that she had nowhere to live," the spokesman said.
"She seems to have lived there for about a year, but not all the time."
It is unclear how she managed to enter the home undetected. Police suspect she might have been closet-hopping, moving from house to house.

The 10 Questions:

1. Who are you telling the story for (primary audience)?
Audience aged 13 to 15.

2. What reaction do you want?
Laughter

3. Is the narrative omniscient (all seeing) or restrictive (viewed from a single perspective)?
(If the narrative is restrictive, whose viewpoint are you using?)
Omniscient.

4.List the important events of the story.
... guy living alone
... food mysteriously disappearing but he doesn't exactly know
... guy buys pizza when there's no more food
... a short while after, it disappeared.
... followed the smell to find a woman living in his closet
... woman offers a piece of pizza

5. Which aspects of the setting of the story are important (time of day… location… period of history…) and how do you intend to establish these important elements?
Time: Day to night. (not 100% decided yet)
Location: in a house - closet, kitchen, living room.

I intend to establish these important elements by designing the interior of the house so that things are realistic, and focus on lighting to decide the time of day, unless it's more like a window-less house kind of thing.

6. What traits of the characters in your story are important and how do you intend to establish these traits?
Guy:
... slow
... always in front of the TV
... likes to eat
... lives alone

Woman:
... Skinny
... Rugged clothes
... Messy hair
... naughty
... at the same time, quite sweet looking?

7. In what order are the important events (step 4 above) covered? Is it a strictly linear sequence of events in time, or does the story contain any flashbacks or other interruptions to the sequence of events?
Linear sequence.

8. How does the story flow, does the pace change? Does it contain a surprise? Consider your answers to 1 and 2 above when making your response.
Pace – Quite constant? until guy's pizza went missing. Contains surprises.

9. How will you use sound to help all your responses to 5-8 above?
Music: Light orchestra/ instrumental, sound effects, and cartoon sound effects.

10. Does your story need dialog?
(write out the dialog)
No dialogue.

Day 02

It will be tough juggling two heavy modules in a block. Hopefully all goes well!

but the 3 that I shared with the group was
1. Balloon Priest
2. Japanese man finds woman in Closet
3. Collecting Fortune for 'Dead' Husband

On the same day, we've to decide which to do. My actual plan was to choose Balloon Priest, because I got the news from my Creative Writing class, where I wanted to make a story about balloons, but was then changed. Thought it was pretty weird that someone would actually try a stunt like that, but anyway, couldn't do it as Vivien chose that story. I was quite sure no one would have gotten that story though :(.. Well anyway, next, collecting fortune for 'dead' husband seemed to be common, well at least that's what Alan said. So in the end, I've chosen to do the one where the Japanese man found a woman in his closet. According to Alan, it's more interesting compared to the Balloon Priest idea. So, yeah, hopefully :)

Day 01

First day started off with the class forming 5 groups.
My group members include Gina, Hanis, Jarrold, and Nafisah, and myself.
We picked a random paper where each has a story once we unfold it. They were actually weird stories.
Later, we had to decide on the style we'd go for - video, animation - 2d, 3d?

Ours was about a man of few words. All of us were rather shocked when we read it, since *cough* we talk a whole lot more. Anyway, we decided for our story, we would go for video and 2d animation(for flashbacks). I thought it would be pretty interesting to have some motion graphics in it too.

Later, we had to answer 10 questions and present on it. It was a project proposal.
It wasn't easy to make it sound very interesting, even though stories given were weird.

1. Target Audience
Talk show for problematic couples
Examples:
- Oprah, Tyra Banks, Get real, etc.
- Topic: problems with communication between couples
- Usage of case studies to tell story

2. Reaction
Shock
Disbelief
Self-realisation after self analysis
Empathy

3. Style
Restrictive for flash back (Suzanne’s POV)

4. Important Events
Wife writing husband’s utterance in a notebook (gaining evidence to use against him in court)
Longest utterance of the husband
The divorce

5. Setting
Present
Place – courtroom
Time - noon

Flashback
Place – House – dining room
Time - morning

6. Traits
Ernst Hort (husband)
-Surly

sur⋅ly
churlishly rude or bad-tempered: a surly waiter.
unfriendly or hostile; menacingly irritable: a surly old lion.
dark or dismal; menacing; threatening: a surly sky.
Obsolete. lordly; arrogant.

Source from: www.dictionary.com

- Through flashback and the wife’s POV

7. Order of Events
Sequence of events: Not linear
Courtroom > Flashback > Courtroom

8. Story Flow
Pace – Constant and flat
No surprise.

9. Sound
Guy- monotonous voice
Silent background
Ambience
- courtroom: the random spurts of cough
- house: pin-dropping silence, the occasional utensil scrapping

10. Dialogue
Courtroom:
- wife: “we never have rows because he never says anything”
- “the longest utterance during the period was “this coffee tastes like dish-water”” *sniffs*

House:
- wife: daily common questions (eg. Good morning, etc.)
- husband: gesture (eg. Nod, etc.)
- wife: “I want a divorce!!”
- husband: “I agree.”

----------------
Other than that, we found out that MOIP3 is an individual project, and we will have to do an animation based on a weird story.
